Reviewing the No!No! Hair Removal System… No!No! or Yes?Yes?

2008 May 23

Ladies…

I’m so sorry that so much time has passed between my first post about the No!No! and my first review of it… it’s been a tremendously busy time here at aromaleigh.com! While I have had time to keep my legs smooth for our 90 degree weather, I just haven’t had time to actually write about it… :)

In case you’re coming to the blog fresh on this topic, here’s my first post on the subject…

Gadget Crazy: Testing out Sephora’s new No!No! Hair Removal System

no!no!

As I mentioned last time, it took me a while to cozy up to the No!No! concept… but a painful experience with having my underarms subjected to the searing pain of laser hair removal (I think that having my underarms tattooed would be less painful!!!) – made me rethink my desire for the No!No! several times, and ultimately led to my late night impulse purchase.

With the understanding that the use of the No!No! would be a gradual process that might take 6 or more months to yield results, I decided to commit myself to see if this cute little gadget actually delivers… and to share the news!

I am happy to report that you will on the majority of occasions receive any package that you order from Aromaleigh.com much faster than you will receive it from Sephora. (Sheesh, and I am a patient person!!!).

OK… if you’re pro-body hair, or anti-hair removal, or you’re plotting a secret hardcore feminist email campaign to set me straight about the glories of accepting one’s body hair and how I should stop with the silly hair removal essay this very second… Well, please refrain. I simply don’t like body hair. Lots of us don’t. It has nothing to do with what I personally do grooming-wise to primp and pamper myself in relation to my political or societal views. And it certainly has nothing to do with any woman’s rights to remove or to not remove. I am all for the empowerment, equality, betterment, beautifying and advancement of women. I just prefer to do it without labeling, pigeon-holing and excuses. So get your razors, epilators, wax, and No!No!s out and read on, girls… :)

My lovely little black No!No! arrived carefully packed in a box containing everything I would need to get started. An instructional DVD is included, but I chose not to watch it. Firstly, because I hate instructionals. Second, because I was too excited to just read the brief printed instructions and get started on my stubbly legs. Sorry if that is “too much information” (TMI). No, I won’t be providing any pictures of my stark-white legs. That’s definitely TMI.

Here is what you receive in your all-inclusive No!No! Hair Removal System box:

-3 short blades
-2 long blades
-No!No! device in blue, black or pink
-a storage bag
-small brush to clean the no!no! device
-adapter/cord
-Instructional DVD
-1 buffer

Now let’s go through the list. The first two items on the list are the short blades and long blades. These aren’t actually “blades” at all, but rather ceramic inserts that you place into the end of the No!No!. They house the Thermicon wire technology that the No!No! is based on. Your hair comes in contact with the wire, and the heat signal is passed to your hair shaft. The metal strip within the “blade” then lifts away the singed stubble.

Hot blades come in two types, short blades for stubble, and long blades for hair over 1mm in length. It is very important to use the right hot blade for the length of hair you are trying to remove, or else your results will be affected. In my experience, I found the long hot blades to be useless… and instead, worked only on hair of 1mm or less, making sure that I was always working with stubble. This definitely produces the best results, but more on that later!!!

This is what hot blades look like. Kind of scary, but they are not sharp, really…

More Hot Blades Combo

You also receive a buffer in your No!No! box. What exactly are you going to be buffing? Well, remember, the No!No! is not a razor. It does not provide a close, smooth razor shave. This is a common misconception and reason for returning the product in other reviews that I have read. So as long as you’re not expecting a razor-close shave and you understand that using the No!No! is a process and not magic… you should be fine! Once the hair is zapped by the Thermicon wire and singed by the hot blade, it is crystallized and turns into a powder that collects on your hot blades surface and inside of your No!No!. That’s what the little brush is for- to brush away this dust. Keeping your hot blades clean increases their life span.

The buffer, on the other hand… is for making things as smooth as you are used to them being with a razor shave. Your legs or arms will not be left perfectly smooth after using the No!No!. You will still feel a tiny bit of stubble (and if you have very dark or thick hair, I wager that you might even be able to see this stubble). This is remaining singed hair left in your hair follicle after treatment. The buffer’s job is to buff this away and leave you with a totally smooth surface. This is, of course a matter of personal preference. You don’t need to buff. But you may LIKE to buff. I personally don’t buff. I found it to be a pain. Because 2 days later, I am going to be No!No!-ing again, anyway… But you may like the buffer. If I wanted a baby smooth shave, I’d razor it. I’m happy enough with no visual hair and not being perfectly smooth. Good enough for me!

Buffers

I began No!No!-ing 8 weeks ago and I have been very faithful to the process, keeping my legs and arms clear of stubble approximately every 3 days. The goal of the product is a gradual reduction in hair density, meaning that your individual hairs will grow back thinner and sparser over time and eventually, not at all. That every-3-day schedule may sound daunting, but it is actually much easier for me than shaving. I usually do either my arms or legs in the morning after my workout, and then the next day, I will do arms or legs in the evening before my night-time shower. Either way, I don’t do it all at once, so it doesn’t take me forever.

The system promises no mess, no cuts, no burns, no irritation and no noise- and all of these things are true.

My first attempt with the No!No!, was, as recommended, on my leg. The square shape of the device, and the fact that the entire head of it must be flat and flush with your skin in order to work properly- makes it ideal for areas of the body that are not curved. In other words, legs and arms are very easy to do. Elbows and knees are quite challenging, even for a seasoned user. Underarms would be almost impossible to do. The bikini area is not recommended. The face is not recommended. (And I can’t figure out how anyone could possibly fanangle the No!No! to work in these last two mentioned areas!) The dimensions of the No!No! are a little surprising. It is by no means large, but it is thicker than you’d think it to be from the photos on the Sephora site. I’d estimate the No!No! to be about 4″ long, 2″ wide and 1.5″ thick. I thought it would be thin, as in thin- like a cell phone is thin. It’s not. It’s boxy compared to a cell phone, such as my Motorola Razr. This is why curved areas are tricky!

The hot blades are very easy to pop in and out of the end of the No!No!. You just match up the product logo on the front of the hot blade with the product logo on the front of the device, and evenly pop in the hot blade until it snaps in. Easy as pie. Plug in your adapter cord first, and then plug the cord in to your device. Of course, don’t No!No! near a tub full of water, or any water, for that matter. (Uh, had to say that…)

The No!No! lights up steady green when you are drawing the device slow and steady across your skin, and this steady green light also means that the device is working. Uneven or quick motion produces a flickering light and causes the device to “jump” around in what can be rather unnerving to a new user. It takes a while to develop that slow and steady “pull” across your skin and at first, when you place the No!No! on your leg, you will surely end up with a flickering, pulsating and jumping device that will scare you. I personally thought that I had unleashed some sort of strange slashing blade on myself and that the green flashing lights and bouncing motion was a precursor to a subtle electrocution. Kind of like the feeling I got when I was 6 and I took the light bulb out of my Lite Brite and stuck my finger in the socket. Hey, my mother never told me not to do it, and I was curious. You only do something that stupid once.

Emergency averted however… I just had to develop the right “touch” and slow glide. Once I mastered this (within a few minutes), I was a No!No!-ing fool, and my entire bathroom stunk of burnt popcorn (yes, this is what your singed hair smells like, and this means that the device is working!). I did my lower legs and my forearms. All that you feel is the slight sensation of warmth. Sometimes it may feel a little hotter on certain areas, such as ankles, around the knee, elbows- anywhere there is less fat to absorb the heat, I believe! My forearms were done in a matter of minutes, as lighter, finer hair is a dream to No!No!. I keep my forearms hair-free because in my work, I like to swatch colors on my arms. Having fuzzy arms is an impediment to this, other than the fact that I just don’t like having fuzzy arms!

My lower legs took longer, as the No!No! may require a few passes with darker, coarser hair. Yes, you may have to repeat certain areas with a few slow strokes to get all of your hair singed. While this may seem like a pain, it’s just necessary. You will find that as your hot blade ages, they will not work as well. I have not yet replaced mine, but I will be, soon. You can get a set of new hot blades (3 short and 2 long) from Sephora for $21. I wish you could purchase just the short hot blades by themselves, because I don’t use the long ones. Unfortunately, they come as a set. :(

I think that if you have very dark, coarse hair, that the No!No! system might prove to be frustrating for you. I am not a particularly hairy person, and I don’t have dark, coarse hair. I have fine-medium hair on my arms, and what I would consider medium brown and blonde hair on my lower legs that is only noticeable once it is quite, well- hairy! A system such as this is quite bearable for me to use, because I do feel that I will achieve results within the reasonable amount of time promised. I already have noticed results in two months.

What have I noticed? The hair on my arms is growing back in extremely fine and thin. Very easy to No!No! again and takes just a few minutes to quickly get the job done. The hair on my legs is not growing any slower, but I do feel that it is thinner in texture and there seems to be less of it. However, it probably isn’t helping my hair growth to be slowed when I am taking hair growth vitamins, fish oil caps and Imedeen Time Perfection vitamins for my skin. I’m quite sure that these all are making my hair grow like crazy (I know that my hair on my head and my nails are growing like a jungle!) However,  I will definitely continue my protocol throughout the summer and with the new hot blade set.

I’ve got 6 months of 90 degree heat and bare legs to inspire me…

The No!No! is definitely not a miracle device, but I sure do prefer it to razor shaving (I always cut myself, even with the Venus or Quattro Razors), and I’ll take it anyday over waxing or laser hair removal.

Did I miss anything? Any questions, just ask me! I’ve got an appointment with my No!No! later tonight!

xoxo

Miss K

Kristen – Did you notice any results from the painful laser treatments? I hate shaving my bikini line! (Sorry if it’s TMI for everyone!) Can you use the No!No! there?

Kristen: Thank you for your review of the No!No! Can I ask what was your preferred method of forearm hair removal prior to using this device?

  4. 2008 May 23

Constance, the laser treatments were effective, after about 6 rounds. It does take numerous cycles to finally zap all of the hair follicles, as at any given time, they are at different stages of the growth cycle and dormancy. I don’t regret getting it done, because it worked- but that laser is not touching any other part of my body! It was agonizing!

The square shape of the No!No! makes it really tricky to get any curvy areas. You might be able to get the top of your legs for bikini line- but I can’t say any further would work. You do need to No!No! “against the grain”, in other words, in an upward motion, like you do with shaving…. so it’s just really hard to position it sometimes, because you can’t go sideways, or upside down, you always have to go upwards against the way the hair grows.

  5. 2008 May 23

Robyn, I used to just shave my forearms along with my legs prior to No!No!-ing. That worked, but I much prefer the No!no!

Constance~I am currently getting my bikini line
(Brazilian actually) and underarms lasered. I called my doctor to get “Emla” numbing cream. He wrote a prescription for a generic cream (including 3 refills) for me. I have dark, coarse hair. I’ve noticed a HUGE difference already after 3 treatments (even after the first treatment). It is very painful without the numbing cream and it takes me about 5 days for the swelling / itching to go away….but it’s worth it to me. The more hair you have, the longer recovery you will have. The dark hair absorbs the laser energy – so if you have dense hair, your body is grabbing more heat. make sense?
Kristen – thank you for the great review!! I’ve been curious about the no!no! since you first posted. I bought an epilator in the meantime to keep my legs fuzz free for longer lapses of time than a razor will do for me. It is slightly painful, but only lasts a moment and the pain is nowhere near the same as with the laser.
Thank you for mentioning the dark, coarse hair disclaimer. Definitely something to ponder. Thanks!

Kristen, I am following your No!No! Posts like a hawk! I *HATE* shaving – its so tedious and I always cut myself – I used an epilator on my legs but found it to be fairly ineffective as my hair is very fine and epilators don’t work well on fine hairs… I am not willing to grow my hair long enough for waxing and then pay $250 every 4-6 weeks for a full body wax… I bought some Veet the other day but so far that isn’t working too well but I am going to give it another shot tonight since its cheap, no cutting myself, and its more of a twice a week thing than everyday thing. I wanted to look into laser hair removal and/or electrolysis but they are expensive and from what I have heard, especially here, painful and I don’t do pain well :) But, like you, I just plain can’t stand body hair – its flat out uncomfortable! SO, thank you for sharing the No!No! and your experience with it with us, because this is something I may just have to save up for so I can finally (eventually? lol) be done with body hair once and for all! :-D

Thanks for the review. I need to get a NoNo. I always get the worst ingrowns from shaving and waxing is so expensive. Sort of OT: what hair growth vitamins are you taking?

  10. 2008 May 24

green, I am taking Lazartigue vitamins.
    http://www.blissworld.com/product/j.f.+lazartigue+revitalizing+hair+vitamins.do?search=basic&keyword=lazartigue&sortby=all&asc=false&page=1

I am almost done with my last jar and happy to report that between those, the fish oil and switching to coloring my hair with henna, that my hair regrowth since stopping Yaz has been profound. I’ve got tons of regrowth, that now is about 2″ long and starting to blend in with the rest of my hair. At first it was just really fuzzy and unmanageable and looked awful around my part-line but finally is starting to look ok. That BCP was the devil for me!

  11. 2008 May 24

Ekatherina, the cool thing about the no!no! versus laser hair removal is that laser only works on dark hair, or hair that has pigment. The best laser results are on those with pale skin and dark hair, actually… laser hair removal does nothing for pale or blond hair.

However, No!No! thermicon tech does affect all hair, supposedly, even those fine blond fuzzy hairs.

I know they say not to use it on your face but I think I am working up the courage to try it on my “peach fuzz”. I hate that fine, fuzzy blond peach fuzz.. anyone else? I’ve been told Threading is great for that, but alas, no threaders around here. And Nair is the worst, ICK!!!

  12. 2008 May 24
    Rachel (FoxFyre) permalink

The peach fuzz doesn’t really bother me, but I have baby fine white-blonde hair on my upper legs (whereas the lower legs grow medium coarse medium brown hair – wth?). Anyway, under most conditions that baby fine hair is invisible, but in bright sunlight it positively glows. Razors won’t even touch it (it doesn’t resist enough to get cut) so I’ve taken to avoiding shorts or skirts above the knee.

If No!No! can kill that super fine fuzz it might be the answer I’ve been looking for! It’s in the 90’s here, too, and long dresses and skirts aren’t cutting it. Jeans are totally out of the question. Now it’s just a question of whether or not the cost is worth the result for me. Thanks for the great review, Kristen. This gives me something to think about. :)

Way cool review, Kristen. I’m still hanging in the balance here. I’d be interested in the “down the road” report, too. And thanks for mentioning lasering – I had considered that for my upper lip, but if it hurts arms and legs, I’d have a thousand FITS if I had it done to my face. I have one of those things that pulls out hair – like a little roto rooter – for your face, legs, wherever. Sorta painful. The price of beauty – singe, burn, pluck, laser, Geez…..

  14. 2008 May 25

Kristen, come up to Boston, there is a mall with a threading kiosk… I kid you not!

FYI to all who want to try Veet/Nair/ect: I gave it another shot last night after completing the 24 hr test patch deal…. I ended up going to bed feeling like my legs were wrapped in NEEDLES, woke up this a.m. with splotches all over my legs and bikini area, 10x more bumps than with shaving… and it didn’t even get all of the hair! I still feel like I have “stubble.” UGH! I am going to resort back to shaving until I can get a No!No! (a Clarisonic is first :-D )

Kristen – thanks for the informative review. At the risk of my husband’s pride, do you think the no-no would work on back hair? He shaves now and I hate the stubble! And no, he’s not a gorilla. :)

  17. 2008 May 27

Ekatherina, good girl to put the Clarisonic first! Although, I have been using mine very delicately since I started my Retin A, it’s still a daily staple… So sorry about the Veet! I have never tried that, I can’t bear chemical removers!

  18. 2008 May 27

Amy, I don’t see why it couldn’t be used on the back- definitely use the short hot blade on stubble under 1 mm, and since it is a large, flat area, I think it would work. I definitely think it would require your assistance though.

I just wanted to mention that I’ve had some laser hair removal done and had wonderful results for what I had done, but it’s too expensive to continue. I went to 2 different places and I found that the one place did a better job and it hurt less. The difference: they were more conservative in the intensity of the laser and they used a gel (I believe it was the same stuff they use for ultrasound). WOW what a difference that made. I have dark, coarse, thick hair. I keep looking at the NoNo and wondering if I want to try it. I’m glad others have had such luck, but I have also read some awful reviews.

As a long-time razor hater and epilator user (first started with Epilady’s rotating coil torture device back in 1991… thank goodness epilators have come a long way since!), I am fascinated and intrigued by this product/review. Specifically, I’m wondering how these two products compare…

The nice thing about epilators is that — aside from significantly delayed regrowth between uses — continued use does thin out the hair. There is no guarantee or promise that regrowth will be eliminated over time, but — like years of plucking the eyebrows out at the follice — it’s a good possibility. However… even after 17 years of epilator use, I still have to engage in some form of body hair combat!

I am wondering how this device, which (as I understand it) can still leave “stubble” (albeit not necessarily like razor stubble), offers to do in 6 months (or more… is this the catch?) what my epilator — so far, the most satisfying hair removal product I’ve found — hasn’t yet been able to achieve in nearly two decades. Even if it takes a year or two or five to be completely hair-free, I am all about it… but I am dying to know if that is really possible — I look forward to receiving your updates on it!

I just ordered one on HSN. They were offering a discounted price of $199 (instead of $250), free shipping and then a breakdown of for payments with a 30 day return policy. I couldn’t resist trying it out for a month for $50. I have gone through painful electrolysis on both lower legs and underarms. Unfortunately I had to stop because my finances changed and i think I am about 75% hairfree. Some growth cycles are at 90% because there will only be a dozen hairs under my arms, but sometimes double that.

I’m hoping the No! No! will get me to the end because I now have two kids and being able to do something at home seems really good to me.

    Hi Miss K,

From a gentleman here, I too have a couple questions for you.

I was on certain meds a while back that caused me to gain some unwanted body here, primarily on my upper chest and some, not a lot but some on my back. Now, i’ve been in search of “something” that will rid this from me. I’ve read on the NoNo system but, do you recommend something else or something with more longevity or permanence? How is laser and how safe is laser? Are there safe topicals one can use to rid the unwanted hair and limit its return?

I look forward to your response.

Hi Has anyone used the No No that was naturally dark skinned (indian or black ethnicity)? My skin is naturally dark and my hair is courser and black in colour.

I have done one session of professional laser removal on the (whole) bikini line and so I would want to use the no no for that area too if I was to purchase it. I would also want it for the underarms and upper lip…that would be my reasons for buying it.

I would love to hear from anyone that is in a similar situation as me and has tried it in the areas i’ve mentioned.

Am very interested in the No! No!, but have a question or 2. From what I’m reading here, the No! No! does not quite get the hair down to the skin, right? The “Buffer” finishes the job. Does the Buffing hurt, as in ripping the leftover hairs out…or do they just rub off gently? Does the No!No! eventually kill the folicles, thereby stopping hair re-growth?

Must I use a regular razor to get the area’s that are hard to shave along with the No!No!? (Ankle area in particular…and knees…)

Any help someone could provide would be appreciated:)

Great review…chock full of information I was looking for. The Shopping Channel is carrying it today as the Showstopper and I was considering it until I read that you don’t recommend it for underarm or bikini! Sure I would love to permanently remove all the hair on my legs – that over time has become thinner and sparser (the hair that is LOL)! but it’s the bikini and underarm where it is coarse and dark (I’m Italian) that I would love to permanently remove. I did a laser treatment last fall but missed the 6 week repeat and find the hair is coming back in those areas. Anyway…not sure if I will invest the $$.

Those of you getting bumps and ingrown hair. I have had this problem for years. It is simply horrible and embarrassing. A friend of mine had same problem and was prescribed Bactriban (spelling?). Anyway I happened to have this cream from a prescription for my child. I tried it and it is a miracle, honestly. All bumps are gone and my skin is almost scar free. Wish I had known earlier, for many years I would not wear a swimsuit without a skirt. Hope this helps someone else.

I’d just like to say for all those men who have asked, yes, men can use it too. :)

thank you for your very thorough review of the No! No! I’m still considering to purchase and want to use on bikini area only. Is it really not recommended for health reasons or just because it can be difficult to maneuver> I’m quite flexible, so if it’s just due to difficulty I can overcome that issue.

    Hi everyone,
Just to let you all know – if you buy a No!No! on eBay, it’s a LOT cheaper! You can still get an unopened box, but for about half the price!

Thanks for all of this info on the No!No! I have put up with blonde peach fuzz on my face for over 40 years. After going through the change, I am now getting a heavier “moustache” and some of the little bugers are even coming in dark and course! Tweezers just don’t seem to work as my eyesight is failing too!!! I have always been afraid to wax, thread, shave or do anything, because once you start, you have to keep up, therefore, I just pretended that nobody could see it (unless they got close enough to kiss!). I saw the No!No! demoed on HSN and even called. The customer service lady said yes, it could be used on the face. But after reading Miss K’s blog, how the devil can I get to my upper lip? Remove my nose first? I had considered laser treatments for my fuzz, but if it doesn’t work on white hair, then my fuzz won’t be affected. If I do start threading or waxing, how often does that need to be redone? Sorry, I am a virgin when it comes to hair removal methods and have no one to ask. What is my best method to defuzz?

I hope my No No experience can help…I’ve been using my No No for a year now and use it about twice a week. (It’s not half as scary to use as you think, once you get going!) I have thick dark hair everywhere (or so it feels!) and the No No was my last chance saloon, except for laser treatment. I’ve found that where the hair is sparse, such as my feet or the small of my back, the No No has made it almost disappear, as long as I keep up with the treatments. Those areas feel a little stubbly, but I can’t see anything with the naked eye. Where the hair is thicker and coarser, such as on my legs, the hair seems much the same as it was before I started No No-ing, although I think a few bare patches may be emerging (hopefully that’s not wishful thinking!). The No No doesn’t ‘cut’ as close to the skin as shaving, so I have to shave my legs as well if they’re on public view! But I’m just glad to have less hairy legs than I did before, with no pain, no ingrowing hairs and no shaving rash. And I’m really pleased with my back and feet. Put it this way: if my No No broke, I’d buy another!
