Catch some zzzz’s!

I’ve been trying to get more sleep every night.

Why? Because they don’t call it “Beauty Sleep” for nothin’! Apparently, my sleep deprivation could be contributing to much more than perpetual dark circles under my eyes. Lack of sleep affects your mood, weight, immune system, ability to concentrate, hormonal fluctuations, and of course- your skin!

Did you know that your skin is busy at night, even while you’re at rest? That’s right. This is the time when your skin is in repair mode. “At night, your body’s circadian rhythm naturally lulls into repair mode, which peaks between 1 and 3 A.M.” , according to Tom Mammone, executive director of Research & Development for Clinique. “Skin also heats up and gets thirsty in the middle of the night- it opens up, and larger molecules like peptides and Vitamin C penetrate better.”

Aha! If you ever wondered what the mysterious and wondrous action of our best-selling Nocturne Overnight Mineral Treatment was, there you have it. Many customers wonder how putting a powder on their face at night can have any benefit. It’s just “powder”. But the benefit lies in the active ingredients in the powder and the fact that your skin is busy at night. Did you know that before falling asleep, that your body lowers it’s core temperature by sweating? And it is this perspiration that actually activates the ingredients in Nocturne and makes them available to your skin to absorb when your pores are most receptive. All night long, your body will go in and out of sleep cycles- and you might even wake to find yourself either a little overheated, or a little chilled and just plain clammy. Ick!

So… the golden rule is eight hours of sleep a night. Not just in quantity of sleep, but in quality too! Eight hours of restful, peaceful sleep.

How do you get your peaceful slumber?

So true, so true, Kristen… everything you said. Me and DH are night-owls so getting to bed earlier than 1am is a challenge. But when we make the effort, we sure do feel better the next day.

Another thing we do to insure a good night’s sleep is get in our hot tub every night, no matter how late it is. When we’ve gotten lazy and skipped a night, we have a hard time falling asleep and sleeping deeply.

I can’t use a sleep mask over my eyes because I always end up having a bad headache when I wake up. But DH uses one every night. I guess I’m weird in that area.

And lastly, no matter how tired I am or how late it is, I always have my nightly ritual of face washing (with Clarisonic) and Nocturne along with a few other potions.
It’s so important, I believe, to not sleep with makeup on. Although, AL’s makeup has pure ingredients, using the night time to do ‘beauty treatments’ is the best thing you can do for your skin.

Adults need far more sleep than they get! 6 hours just isn’t enough time for your body to recharge and regenerate.

I like to get 9 to 10 hours of sleep a night. While that sounds like a lot to most people, I’ve always been that way. I’m lucky that Ian sleeps late too….we get up around 9:30 or 10. I love my bed!

I wish I could sleep 10 hours a night! I love sleeping, too! Unfortunately, I’d have to get to bed at 7:30pm in order to get 10 hours, and that is impossible. Darn it! But I try to get between 7 and 8 EVERY night with a nap on the weekends. I definitely feel better when I do!

If I wore those PJs….I’d definitely get LESS sleep! They are too cute and I don’t think DH would be able to resist….

Hey Cin– I LOVE MY BED too! I need to get cheap sheets though. A big part of the reason I love my bed is because of the SOFT sheets!

I usually get enough sleep because I don’t work until the afternoon so I get up when I WANT to get up not because I have to go to work early in the morning.

I forgot to say something! Kristen, I am really glad that you are working on your “sleep hygiene” as my shrink calls it. Not only will your skin look great, but you’ll feel better and live longer!

Tamara, that’s a good point about sheets – good quality linens aren’t cheap, but they are soooo worth it!

Here’s a bit from Ask Yahoo – “Thread count in sheets can range from 80 to 700, although most stores sell sheets that range from 180 to 320. In general, the higher the thread count, the softer the fabric feels, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the sheets will last longer (and sheets with a higher thread count are usually more expensive). One linens department manager says thread counts above 380 are “kind of a farce.” Manufacturers twist two threads in a way that lets them double the sheet’s thread count.”

So don’t assume that those 600 thread count sheets are going to be better than a 300 count. Stores like Linens & Things, Bed Bath Beyond, and dept stores like Macy’s have samples of the sheets so you can feel them and judge for yourself.

And get a good mattress! If your mattress is more than 10 years old, time for a new one. Yes, they’re expensive, but think about how much time you spend on it. A $2000 mattress means you’re spending about 55 cents a day over a 10 year period. You spend more than that on your daily cup of coffee!

Ok, I’m done lecturing now. But trust me, I spend so much time sleeping, I’m practically an expert. Should I mention Ian and I got ELEVEN hours last night? I was downright cheerful when I woke up!

I find sleep science so interesting! I have a sleeping disorder, so I’m always on the hunt for ways to improve the quality of my sleep. I’ve been known to go 12-14 hours without waking up! I think I love my bed a little TOO much. ;) I feel much better when I get 8-9 solid hours & practice good sleep hygiene. I’m a night owl too, so I have to be extra-vigilant about getting into bed on time.

That’s interesting to know that your skin’s up to some serious repair work while you sack out. Cool!

I’ve been trying hard to get more sleep, getting to bed much more early. I think it’s hard for a body to adjust to MORE sleep! I’ve been feeling really slow and lousy every day for the last few weeks while trying to do this… not energetic and rested. I actually kind of feel like all of my momentum and energetic nature has been sapped. Maybe it is going to take me a while to adjust… but honestly, this just stinks! I’m having the hardest time getting through my days being this tired from getting a good night’s rest, LOL!!!
